Two pickup trucks and were stolen as thieves rummaged through unlocked vehicles in Turner Valley in the overnight hours on Oct. 18.

Turner Valley RCMP Cpl. Tiffany McGregor said there have been upwards of 35 reports of cars entered in town. She said a variety of different items were stolen from inside vehicles, while the thieves also were able to steal a Ford F-150-type pickup truck and a Chevrolet pickup.

She said they suspect it may have been a group of people working together.

“Based on the time and the location of all these residential places, we believe it is that same group of people,” she said.

She said it appears the vehicles were all left unlocked, as none sustained damage.

“They were not broken into, there was no damage to the vehicles,” she said.

She said it was a crime of opportunity as the thieves were looking for easy targets.

It appears the thieves were being selective and, in some cases, items of some value left in plain view ere not taken, she said.

She said a variety of items were stolen from the vehicles.

“Sunglasses, personal items, loose change, and in a couple cases gift cards, things people leave in the console. Nothing of value, but we did have an iPod music player [stolen],” she said.

She said these types of crimes are preventable. She reminded people to remove all valuables from their vehicles and to keep them locked, at all times of day.

“If people do their best to protect their valuables, remove them from their vehicles, lock the vehicle,” she said. “If you’re going to leave your vehicle unlocked at least clean it out.”

She encouraged people to report suspicious activities and in the event of a break in to contact police and not to disrupt the area until police arrive.

Anyone who may have seen the suspects in the recent incidents or who may have any information is asked to contact Turner Valley RCMP at 403-933-7227.
