A Diamond Valley resident has been recognized by the Alberta government for making a difference in the lives of seniors.

The Minister’s Seniors Service Awards honour Albertans who improve the lives of seniors through outstanding service, and recipients of the 2023 awards were announced by the Province on April 12.

“These dedicated individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations use their time, talents and resources to protect seniors, improve their quality of life, support their everyday needs and help them stay engaged in their communities,” reads a statement from the Province.

Cathy Hume, of Diamond Valley, is one of three people in Alberta that were given an Individual Award.

Hume was nominated by Highwood MLA RJ Sigurdson, and her nomination states that she has an unwavering commitment to creating positive experiences within the housing and healthcare sector for older adults.

“Beginning as a recreation therapist, and advancing to leadership roles, Hume’s volunteer efforts have been transformative,” the nomination states.

Hume’s roles include serving as president of the Calgary Seniors Housing Forum Society for 14 years, working with the Creative Aging Calgary Society, and taking advisory roles at the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary where she contributes to age-friendly initiatives, the nomination said.

“Her visible presence and passions ensure that thousands of vulnerable seniors have a voice and access to crucial information and supports.”

The Town of Okotoks also received accolades with an Age-friendly Alberta Recognition Award, one of three municipalities to get the recognition.

The award acknowledges communities that have taken meaningful steps to become more age-friendly by making services more accessible and inclusive for seniors with different needs, the Province said.

Jason Nixon, minister of seniors, community and social services, said he is blown away by the dedication that goes towards supporting seniors in Alberta.

“This year’s recipients demonstrated the spirit of hard work and generosity Albertans are known for,” Nixon said.
