LETTER: If carbon tax isn't the answer, what is?

Climate change is a factor behind the drought and wildfires that have gripped Alberta in the past couple of years.

Dear Editor,

I just answered your online poll — "Do you support Ottawa's decision to raise the carbon tax by 3.5 cents a litre on April 1?" — with a yes.

I echo to your readers the same thing I've said to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre: If you oppose, you must propose. No carbon tax? All right then, what's the alternative?

Climate change is a factor behind the drought and wildfires that have gripped our province in the past couple of years. It is also a factor driving the global energy transition which is accelerating.

In the U.S., for instance, heat pumps have outsold gas furnaces for the past two years. Ethiopia has banned the import of non-electric vehicles, and I'm willing to bet anyone $100 that at least one other country will follow suit in the next 12 months. Who's going to buy our favourite exports in 15 years?

Doing nothing is not an option. I look forward to the Western Wheel publishing some future articles on what our choices are.
