EDITORIAL: Foothills community can help make grad memorable

As much as grad is an unforgettable evening, it can also be an expensive one, which can be too much for families struggling to make ends meet.

It’s an evening they’ll remember for the rest of their lives, so it’s important they look the part.

The rising cost-of-living when it comes to food, shelter, utilities and other essentials is exerting significant pressure on household budgets these days, often leaving little at the end of the month, which is putting the squeeze on those expenditures that might be considered extras.

One of those frills, although it’s probably not accurate to characterize it in that way, for households with a Grade 12 student is costs associated with grad, that big night with classmates that culminates 13 long years of schooling. It’s a night of accomplishment, of celebration, a chance to dress up and let loose with friends who have been on the same memorable journey.

As much as it’s an unforgettable evening, it can also be an expensive one, which can be too much for families struggling to make ends meet. That’s where MyCityCare Okotoks comes in as the local non-profit is hosting the Cinderella Project & Tux Shop, a one-day pop-up that will provide formal attire and more for grads.

Lorna Jewer, director of MyCityCare Okotoks, rightfully says that grad is a once-in-a-lifetime event and that families with kids in Grade 12 shouldn't have to choose between everyday necessities or going to the party.

For the pop-up, which will be held in mid-April, to be successful, it requires the support of the community through the donation of dresses, suits, shoes, shirts, ties and other formal wear. It would be great if MyCityCare was able to collect a sizable inventory so grads can choose just the right outfit for their big day.

Formal wear and accessories can be dropped off at Foothills Cleaners on Riverside Drive in Okotoks until April 8.

As a community, let’s make sure every grad is dressed to the nines.
