A toddler is dead after having been flown to hospital by STARS air ambulance Thursday afternoon after being found in the septic tank behind a Priddis home.

AHS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux confirmed that EMS out of Priddis responded to a call around 12:50 p.m. April 26 that a toddler was missing on the property on Priddis Meadows Place and thought to have fallen into the septic tank.

Brideaux said paramedics and Foothills Fire Department were able to retrieve the child from the tank and was transferred into the care of STARS, where he was flown to Alberta Children's Hospital in critical life-threatening condition around 1:45 p.m.

An eye-witness who was visibly shaken and asked not to be named claims to have been working on a nearby construction site when he rushed to help emergency crews. They retrieved hooks and other equipment from their job site and helped crews get the boy out of the tank.

The witness said the child was unconscious and not breathing when they got him out.

"The paramedic was there and asked me to start doing chest compressions."

RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Curtis Peters confirmed in a phone call at 3:20 p.m. that the child had passed away.

A media release stated that an autopsy is not scheduled at this time and the RCMP will not be commenting on the manner and cause of death.
