Emergency crews are working to reunite a horse with its owner after it missed a collision that killed a second horse near the Okotoks overpass.

The two horses were walking along the shoulder of the Highway 2 around midnight on Aug. 20 when one was struck and killed. The second survived and is currently in the care of Greg Alexander, owner of Just Passing Horse Transport and Bereavement Services.

He hopes to reunited the animal with its owner.

Alexander said they don't know who the horse's owner is. There are no markings or anything else that could identify who it belongs to.

He said the surviving horse was not struck and is not injured.

“He would've been traumatized just a little and shocked, whether he saw it, who knows,” he said.

The surviving horse is an older chestnut sorrel gelding with a white star on its face.

“Other than that, there's no distinguishing marks,” said Alexander.

The horse that was killed is a mare. He said there wasn't anything on the horse that was killed in the collision that will help then identify its owner.

“We couldn't find any brands, it was a sorrel horse as well with a white star and blaze,” said Alexander.

The surviving horse, which Alexander is calling “Lucky', is on his property in the Shepard area. Photos of the horse are available on his Facebook page at Just Passing Horse Transport and Bereavement Services.

There were no injuries to individuals in the vehicles involved in the collision.

Anyone who may know the horse's owner can call Alexander at 403-680-4177 or Okotoks RCMP at 403-995-6400.
