A stolen pickup truck recovered west of High River around noon Aug. 1 has been confirmed to be the same vehicle that led Mounties on a high speed chase the evening of Tuesday, July 31. High River RCMP is now investigating after a member of the public reported a suspicious vehicle covered in spray paint behind a storage shed at the former Western Feedlots outside High River. The citizen who called in the complaint had also spotted a suspicious male walking eastbound along Coal Trail not far from where the truck was found, and police have taken the man into custody. High River RCMP Sgt. Jason Cann confirmed the vehicle recovered, a Toyota Tundra, was the one involved in the chase. According to Okotoks RCMP Cpl. Kory Crerar, the vehicle originally became known to police in the area when complaints came in of a suspicious vehicle at a rural location. Okotoks RCMP responded and attempted to make an arrest, but the individual fled. Pursuit was not initiated at that point, but the vehicle was spotted soon after on Highway 2, near Aldersyde. "It was at that point when the vehicle was out on the highway, that based on the totality of the circumstances, a pursuit was initiated," said Crerar. "After a short period of time, the suspect's driving patterns were too erratic and pursuit was terminated.: It's believed that the truck was being repainted behind the shed in an effort to disguise it.

Police have charged the man arrested, Michael Hautala of Golden, BC, with numerous offences including possession of stolen property exceeding $5000, possession of stolen property not exceeding $5000, fail to comply with a recognizance, possession of a prohibited weapon, flight from police, resist a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief, as well as numerous traffic safety act offences.
“This arrest has allowed charges from multiple police jurisdictions to be brought before the courts,” says Sgt. Cann.  “This is a perfect example of public and police collaboration resulting in crime reduction. We appreciate this and encourage community members to continue reporting suspicious events.”
