Thieves take off with six dirt bikes

Thieves took approximately $70,000 in dirt bikes at a Foothills area motorsports store.

Thieves took approximately $70,000 in dirt bikes at a Foothills area motorsports store.

“They cut our barbed wire and jumped over our fence and then cut a hole right through our compound and then took six bikes,” said JC Seitz, an owner with Cycle Works Foothills just north of Okotoks.

He said the thieves came back with a truck and trailer and loaded up six bikes. The thefts occurred around 3 a.m. on June 28, Seitz said.

The crime was reported to the RCMP but Seitz admitted he is not optimistic.

“There is not a whole lot you can do,” he said. “The truck and trailer were parked on the road and you couldn’t see it in the camera.”

The motorsport store has been north of Okotoks along Highway 2A (right next to Big Sky Barbecue) for five years. Seitz said it was the first time they had been broken into.

“It sucks — a pain in the butt,” Seitz said. “We got cameras and everything.”

He said he didn’t think the bikes were targeted, that the thieves just took whatever they could grab.

Seitz has lived in the Okotoks area virtually his entire life. He said the thefts are a sign of the times.

“I guess it is the way the economy is,” he said. “It’s happening everywhere, it seems like it is never-ending.

“I guess I will just make the compound harder to get into,” he said.

Okotoks RCMP was unavailable for comment.
