Residents will soon have more time to report minor crimes or have criminal record checks done at the Okotoks RCMP detachment.
The front service counter at the Southridge Emergency Services building will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays for people unable to make it during the current hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Okotoks protective services director Scott Roberts said the idea was tried a few years ago, but was deemed unnecessary at the time.
“We’re going to try it again, because we know work times have changed and so we’re going to give it a try for about six months and see how it works out for us,” said Roberts.
Extending the hours will allow residents to access the RCMP for longer hours to report vehicle collisions or minor crime, or to have criminal record checks and fingerprinting done, he said. RCMP remain available on a 24-hour basis.
“These would be only the administrative duties, not necessarily the functions that would be fulfilled by an RCMP member,” said Roberts. “Things that our municipal employees can look after at the front desk.”
The change will be in effect for the next six months. If it is well-received the Town will make the new hours permanent.
