CRIME Costco Arrests
Okotoks RCMP took two women into custody at Costco on Aug. 13 after Calgary Police Service tailed a stolen truck out of Calgary. A third male suspect was followed at a distance by HAWCS helicopter north out of town back into Calgary before being arrested.

Three people have been arrested after Calgary Police followed a stolen truck out of Calgary Monday evening. The stolen Ford F-350, stolen from Irricana two days prior and carrying a male driver and two female passengers, was followed to Shoppers Drug Mart in Okotoks from northeast Calgary by the Calgary Police Auto Theft Resource Team (ATRT) undercover units. It's believed that the two female passengers shoplifted while inside the Shoppers Drug Mart. The suspects then drove to Costco around 5:45 p.m. Aug. 13, where Okotoks RCMP members were able to arrest two women that had been passengers in the pickup without alerting the driver. The third male suspect left town in the pickup around 7:30 p.m., with the Calgary Police HAWCS helicopter watching from the sky. “HAWCS helicopter was able to maintain visual on a stolen pickup,” said Calgary Police Sgt. Trent Petersen. “It left Okotoks, heading east, eventually heading back into Calgary, where the driver was taken into custody." Able to keep an eye on the vehicle without engaging, Okotoks RCMP followed at a distance until the vehicle left the area, driving east on Highway 552. When the vehicle travelled north, Strathmore RCMP initiated pursuit and tried unsuccessfully to stop the truck with spike belts. The Ford travelled another 30 kilometres on three rims and one tire at speeds ranging from 100-150 km/h. According to RCMP spokesperson Cst. Mike Hibbs, the RCMP decided at that point to disengage pursuit. "The pursuit was shut down by the RCMP because it became too unsafe for the public," Cst. Hibbs said. The truck made its way back to Calgary on westbound Stoney Trail, trying to turn north onto 52 St. SE where he lost control, striking a sign and the centre median. Fleeing the wrecked vehicle on foot, the suspect flagged down a driver on Stoney Trail and asked for a ride. Calgary Police was able to catch up with the vehicle, stopping it and taking the suspect into custody. "The objective was to get some people into custody, and we helped CPS to get them into custody," said Cst. Hibbs. "I think it went very well – we have a good relationship with those folks." Corey Bates, 40, of Calgary, has been charged with theft of motor vehicle over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, criminal dangerous driving, criminal flight from police, and three Traffic Safety Act tickets. Bates will next appear in court on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Janelle Umpherville, 28, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of possession of methamphetamine and possession of stolen property over $5,000. She will next appear in court on Friday, Aug. 17. Sandra Woloshyn, 36, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of methamphetamine, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and two counts of breach of recognizance. Woloshyn will next appear in court on Aug. 21.
