A Calgary police dog and the HAWCS helicopter assisted RCMP in apprehending a man a mountie had attempted to arrest at an Aldersyde gas station the evening of July 28.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa said when an officer tried to place handcuffs on one of two suspects at the Petro-Canada gas station at around 9:30 p.m., the man broke free and ran.

“She was only able to get one cuff on and he just bailed on her,” he said.

When the man fled to the nearby Volker Stevin lot, the RCMP police dog service out of Calgary was called in to assist.

“Shortly after he was apprehended and treated for minor injuries,” Randhawa said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to High River Hospital, escorted by an RCMP officer in the ambulance.

Dustin Sklerek, of Blackie, was charged with possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and obstruction. During his July 31 court date in Calgary, Sklerek was remanded.

Another man was taken into custody at the Aldersyde Petro-Canada station, said Randhawa.

“He was arrested for possession of stolen property and was transported back to the detachment where he was questioned,” he said. “He was released without charges.”

Randhawa said RCMP were called about two suspicious men “hanging out at the gas station for an extended period of time.”

When police ran the license plate of the gray Ford Explorer they learned the plate had been stolen.

“When members approached (the suspects) said it was their vehicle –that they were fixing it,” said Randhawa.
