Police caught a break Wednesday afternoon after an astute eye witness called to report a theft.

Nanton RCMP received a call reporting theft of used batteries from an automotive shop just before 5 p.m. on April 4. The witness was able to provide a description of the vehicle and the direction it was headed.

A member from the Nanton detachment spotted the vehicle soon after and attempted to stop it on Highway 2 just north of High River. The car didn’t stop but lost control and hit the ditch soon after due to icy conditions before pursuit was initiated.

Members from the High River RCMP detachment attended to assist in the arrest of the four occupants of the Hyundai sedan, which turned out to be stolen out of Calgary. Other property recovered from the vehicle is believed to be stolen.

”Thanks to an observant witness and a bit of help from icy roads, we were able to stop a few more thieves,” says Corporal Travis Ogilvie, commander of the Nanton RCMP detachment.

“Those calls from the public to report suspicious activity or crimes in progress are always appreciated.”

The two men and two women apprehended have not been named yet, but charges for property-related offences are pending.
