Former Foothills resident Joely Lambourn, was arrested in Gleichen Tuesday, after she escaped from a Saskatchewan healing lodge on Friday. Lambourn is serving a two-and-a-half year sentence for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle in the death of a cyclist, Deric Kryvenchuk. The 41-year-old father of two young girls was riding his bike on Highway 7 on May 4, 2015 when Lambourn struck and killed him with her car. Kryvenchuk was an avid cyclist and was doing a familiar route from his house southwest of Okotoks that day. Lambourn denied she was distracted while driving, but other motorists said they noticed her weaving on the road. Trial witnesses also testified they saw Kryvenchuk biking on the side of the road, but Lambourn said she did not see him and was unsure of what she hit. Her driver’s licence was suspended at the time due to unpaid speeding tickets and a careless driving ticket. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Lambourn’s arrest Nov. 9 and Gleichen RCMP apprehended her four days later. Gleichen is about 300 kilometres away from Maple Creek, or a three-hour drive. Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge is one of two healing lodges for women inmates. The lodge is for medium and minimum-security prisoners. Correctional Services of Canada Spokesperson Kelly Dae Dash said healing lodge staff noted Lambourn as unaccounted for at 12:25 p.m. on Friday. “The perimeter is defined, but not controlled by a fence,” she said. “Offenders know where they are supposed to be.” The correctional services said they will be investigating how Lambourn escaped. She is currently in custody and her case will be assessed to determine what prison she should be moved to, said Dash. Correctional Services of Canada has nine healing lodges, which use traditional aboriginal teachings and beliefs in its services for inmates.
