Okotoks’ Samantha Sherwood, Aasha Kail, Gabby Bishop, Ashleigh Smith, Taylor MacDougall and Brooklyn Muir are suiting up for Zone 2 at the Alberta Summer Games.

The Foothills flag will be flying high on the Alberta Summer Games diamond this week. Six Okotokians — Gabby Bishop, Aasha Kail, Taylor MacDougall, Brooklyn Muir, Samantha Sherwood and Ashleigh Smith — made the grade for Zone 2’s softball entry at the 2018 Alberta Summer Games, July 19-22 in Grande Prairie. “It’s going to be a blast. I’m so excited,” Bishop said. “It’s just going to be a good memory and a good experience.” Bishop can thank mom for her spot on the team after trying out at for the team at her behest. “My mom kind of made me do it,” she said. “I thought, why am I doing this? I know I’m not going to make it.’ But I still gave it my all and tried my hardest. “I ended up making it and was so surprised.” She expects to play shortstop, where she digs up ground balls for the Foothills Fury, and at left field for Zone 2. “Shortstop is a lot of good action, normally it’s ground balls there and I’m strong on ground balls,” she said. “Left field, I don’t know, I just fit there.” The zone outfit has gotten together for two exhibition games and a pair of practices to gear up for the best the province has to offer. “It was pretty awesome to make the team. It was a great opportunity to tryout and I’m really looking forward to it,” Sherwood said. “I think we’re a pretty solid team, solid pitchers, solid hitting.” Sherwood will be heavily involved in the action behind the plate as a catcher, her primary position. She can also play at the hot corner at third base in a pinch. “I enjoy catching for the pitchers because every pitcher is different,” she said. One of those hurlers is her Foothills Fury teammate MacDougall. The Fury are fresh off a third place finish at the provincial tournament. The Okotokian expects to pitch and play second base at the Games, positions she’s played for five years. “It’s a good opportunity to learn and play,” MacDougall said. “We’ve had a couple exhibition games and practices as well as playing in the normal season all year. “It’s helpful for cheering everyone on and learning together. There are a lot of strong leaders and good players. I think we’re going to play really well and hopefully win.” History is on their side. The 2016 Games saw Zone 2 bring home the silver medal in softball with five Foothills area players — Devyn Arnold, Mikhaela Muir, Abby Rowland, Marin Flanagan and Mikayla Chanut — on the team.
