The Foothills Falcons were back to the big dance last weekend and they will use the experience to take the steps to get back next year.

The Falcons finished 12th at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 4A Girls Volleyball Championship in Medicine Hat Nov. 24-25.

“Our goal was to get to provincials, we got there and we deserved to be there,” Falcons coach Joanne Schoneck said. “We competed against everybody, no one got a free ride against us.”

Foothills finished with a 1-5 record against the best in Alberta. Except for a tip here, a half-inch on a spike there, the Falcons could have notched a few more victories.

The majority of their losses came in the maximum amount of sets.

“We’d lose something like 15-12 in the final game,” Schoneck said. “We were in it against everybody, we just couldn’t quite finish.”

The Falcons lone victory at provincials was a redemptive one, downing the Centennial Coyotes. The ‘Yotes had beaten the Falcons in the final of the Bishop O’Byrne tournament as well at Foothills’ own tourney earlier this year.

The Falcons will lose a strong contingent of Grade 12 players to graduation.

“I had five Grade 12s this year,” Schoneck said. “Each one was a tremendous leader both on and off the court.

“They came to practices ready to work hard, volunteered to do jobs that most seniors will pawn off on rookies, and were always positive with everyone around them. They never quit in any situation, just pushed harder. The Grade 12s will be missed and it is hoped that the five returning Grade 11s appreciated the leadership and kindness that the Grade 12s gave them.”

The five seniors are Larissa Little, Teah Simard, Emily Gushulak, Jessica Holden and Alli Taylor.

There is also a bright future with the five returning Grade 11 players, they include Emileigh Inglis, Jessica Bryk, Jazmyn Kellogg, Jenna Romaniuk and Gillian Wayne-Nixon.

“We have some good talent from our Grade 10s coming up,” Schoneck said.

The Falcons JV girls won the South Central zone banner.
