Provincial bound and on a roll. The Foothills Falcons are heading back to the provincial girls rugby championships after romping the Holy Trinity Academy Knights 50-7 in the South Central Zone Tier II final Thursday at the Comp. Foothills Falcon Keelin Fenske, a Grade 12 student, said it means a lot to be going back to provincials in her final year of school. The Falcons won the silver medal last year in the Alberta championships, losing to the Winston Churchill Bulldogs out of Lethbridge in the final. “It means a lot to our seniors,” said Fenske, a flanker. “In Grade 10 we had a rough year, we were adjusting and things. It is exciting because a lot of us have put in so much time and effort for the development of the team. It is so cool to see everyone work together for the same thing.” The Knights are in the developing process, but weren’t quite ready to take on the more experienced, provincial silver medallist of a year ago. They hung in there keeping the score a more than respectable 19-7 at halftime in what was a wet and deteriorating pitch. Falcon Brogan Mior played for the Knights last season. Although she has played for Canada at the international level, going to her first high school provincial tournament means a lot to her. “I really wanted to get to provincials, my brother (Kaden Mior) has gone to provincials before and they were close to winning there. I know Foothills was second and we have a shot at winning. I am really excited and I love playing with these girls. To go to provincials with all of them, means a lot.” Rugby was not the factor for her transferring to Foothills, and although she had plenty of friends on the HTA side, she put that aside when she stepped on the field. “I play with those girls a lot of years and I play with some of them on (Foothills) Lions,” said Mior, who had a try in the game. “But once I get on the field, I have to let that go and play how I normally would.” Falcons coach Jeff Mason wasn’t about to make any predictions on how his team will fare this weekend at provincials, but he’s looking forward to it. “We have the ability to play the same forward game but we have added a new back attack this year,” Mason said. “Brogan (Mior), Claire Shirakawa, Jenna Romaniuk and on wing Jadyn Jeanson and Lauren Waldner and Cara Gitterman.” Shirakawa and Romaniuk are power runners for the Falcons. “We are a more well-rounded team coming into provincials,” Mason said. “We are going in with a strong team and hopefully we can continue to improve, that’s all we are asking. “Hopefully, we can continue to improve on last year’s strengths.” The Tier II Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association finals are June 8-9 at the Calgary Rugby Park.
