Snowy conditions might have contributed to a single-vehicle rollover that claimed the life of an elderly male from Calgary on Highway 22 this morning.

“It’s a bad start to the Thanksgiving weekend,” said Turner Valley RCMP Cpl. Tiffany McGregor.

A westbound sedan was traveling on Highway 22 at 10:22 a.m. when it left the road and rolled into the north ditch near Coal Mine Road in Priddis.

McGregor said no other vehicles were involved.

“We’re still investigating, but I can tell you the weather at the time it was snowing and the roads were wet and there was snow accumulating,” she said. “Whether that contributed or not is not determined.”

There were two in the vehicle at the time. The driver, an 85-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, an 87-year-old female, was taken to hospital in Calgary via ground ambulance.

McGregor said the female passenger was still in critical condition as of 4 p.m. Friday.

“She was critical and family were at hospital with her,” she said.

RCMP are not releasing the name of the couple.

With Friday’s snowfall, she urged people to drive for the conditions, slow down and leave more room between them and other vehicles.

“Drive for the weather and slowing down certainly will never hurt and depending on the weather conditions of the day and where you’re traveling to, leave lots of time to get where you’re going,” said McGregor.
