Unexpected historical information popped up last month. I learned that tennis in Okotoks dates back to 1919 with the development of the Okotoks Tennis Club. The club leased a lot from the town on Elma Street West for a tennis court. It outgrew that location and a second court was developed in 1931 on the site of the old hockey arena (which had collapsed in 1925). These courts were used into the 1940s.
The only tennis club picture from this period that is in town archives shows a wintery image taken on the escarpment looking down on the Elma Street area where the court was located.
I am hopeful that someone in our town has an old photo album with a picture of the tennis club and/or its players or old newspaper clippings. If this is the case, it would be great to get a copy for our club. Please e-mail me at [email protected].
