Grown-ups can take a break from the little ones this weekend at a gathering that will have them sipping brew, sampling food and listening to local entertainment. The Town is hosting its second annual Okotober Food Fest Oct. 20 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the downtown area. The adult-only event offers food trucks on Clark Avenue and beer tasting at the Landmark site with local singer/songwriters performing. With the majority of Okotoks’ events focused on the younger demographic and families, community events specialist Mark Doherty said the adult community was ready for an event just for them. “We always do our events for families so this is something we thought we could put together for the adult community,” he said. “We thought let’s try this and see how it goes.” Doherty said Okotober Food Fest turned out to be a success. “The event was well received,” he said. “We had about 1,000 people show up.” It led Doherty to planning last summer’s wine festival. This weekend, beer will be supplied by Hard Knox Brewery in Black Diamond, Brauerei Fahr in Turner Valley, Six Corners Brew Works in Okotoks, Outcast Brewing in south Calgary and Tool Shed Brewing Company in northeast Calgary. Chinook Honey Company near Okotoks will offer honey wines for those looking for more variety. “Our mandate has always been to support local,” said Doherty. “Anything we can do to support the local economy we’ll do that.” Doherty said each company will offer a variety of products to sample. “You might be looking at over a dozen varieties of products to taste,” he said. “Chinook Honey will bring about four different types of mead.” Seating will increase from last year’s 240 to 350 with heaters provided in the tent in the event of cold weather, Doherty said. “It’s a chance to bring the adult community together to get out and listen to some good music and enjoy a few beers,” said Doherty. “It’s a social event. It’s an inexpensive night out.” Entertainment will be provided by Michela Sheedy and The Handsome Devils. Souvenir mugs cost $5 and sampling tickets will be $2 each.
