The long-anticipated cannabis legalization bill has gone back to the Senate for some tweaking but it’s likely the major issues will be weeded out by the fall. The legalization is a good thing, It means there’s some quality control, it may lesson the crime element of the drug and through education and parental guidance, it should not lead to a flock of minors smoking marijuana. And after all, it will be illegal to smoke pot as a minor. It’s coming and the Town of Okotoks has taken a positive approach towards legal marijuana’s arrival. Sure, some will scoff that Okotoks is taking the lead of bigger centres like Calgary. A wise move. Those centres have more manpower, more expertise than smaller communities like Okotoks. However, Okotoks didn’t just cut-and-paste. The Town has made adjustments, such as the distance pot shops can be from schools, due to listening to the public. It is doing its due diligence by staying in touch with the public. Although making its own decision, it only makes sense for the Town of Okotoks to hash out ideas with larger centres.
