Dear Editor,
In an amazing display of logic, the Town of Black Diamond has opted to withhold its support for the Sheep River Public Library’s operating budget. Apparently bewildered and paralyzed by years of study, the council, in a 4-3 vote, decided to deflect this decision by plebiscite onto the citizenry, who will determine the library’s fate by ticking off a box on a ballot. Somehow I fail to see the wisdom/logic in this decision. Town council, together with the town administrator, must surely be more knowledgeable than the average taxpayer, …

Dear Editor,
In response to all of the submitted letters especially the letter by L. Tompkins Aug. 4 with regards to the tragic day’s events of July 18. Yes, a tragic incident and my condolences go out to the family members left behind, however, there are also people who have been overlooked in this incident. What about the RCMP officer who actually made the split second decision to pull the trigger? What about the officer’s family who will now have months of stress in relation to the enquiry.
People are always queuing up to criticize the …

Dear Editor,
I am confused, aghast, dismayed at the decision to hold a plebiscite regarding the funding of the new Sheep River Library, currently under construction in Turner Valley. Last March I attended an open meeting at the Oilfields High School regarding this issue, at which time there was obviously tremendous public support for co-funding the library at a cost of $250,000 to the residents of Black Diamond. However, our council has seen fit to put this issue to a plebiscite. I see from the Western Wheel that the vote was …

Dear Editor,
Well here it is, election time again and as I look back over the past three years as a councillor in the Town of Turner Valley I am very sad.
We have managed to raise taxes every year even in the past year where citizens in our town have seen their property values decline.
We have seen many businesses close their doors with at least three in the past year.
We gave control of the cemetery to the M.D. of Foothills because we had difficulty working with our neighbours on a maintenance …

Dear Editor,
Regarding the upcoming plebiscite dealing with the town funding of the Sheep River Library, residents of Black Diamond, please do not vote with your wallets.
There is great concern that taxpayers of Black Diamond will see an increase in their taxes if the construction funding for the new library building passes. This is not correct. If you refer to the 2010 Town of Black Diamond budget, you will note that the portion of the budget for library is $.03 out of every $.77 that the town receives. If you look …

Dear Editor,
On Aug. 8, my sister found Eddie staggering on the side of the road not far from her house. She was mortified when she discovered he had been shot with an arrow completely through his chest. Eddie was obviously in shock and unable to speak so she helped him into the car and he was whisked away to Calgary for immediate medical attention.
The doctors were waiting outside for Eddie with a stretcher and when he arrived the rush to save his life was on. Eddie endured a six-hour surgery …

Dear Editor,
Our Sheep River Community Library — it is a long-time shared resource for all of us in our two towns so close together. We share many things and work together to help each other. Good neighbours do that! Hmm, what do we share? We share living in this marvelous foothills setting close to the forest reserve, and the Sheep River! We share goodwill in community organizations from schools, to children’s activities like the Boys and Girls Club, Scouts, Guides, sport teams. How about the service organizations like Lions, Kinsmen, …

Dear Editor,
I write this letter in response to an article published by the Western Wheel on July 7, 2010 “Turner Valley destination restaurant closes”.
I am the long time owner of the premises, formerly leased by the destination restaurant Route 40 Soup Company. The owners of the Route 40 South Company Restaurant, Mark and Lanny (Carol-Ann) Klaudt, are quoted by the Western Wheel stating that a forthcoming rent increase for the premises was one reason why they could not continue business in Turner Valley.
This statement by the Klaudts is inaccurate: I …

Dear Editor,
Re: “Plebiscite to Decide Funding” and “Plebiscite the wrong answer” July 28 issue.
When we moved to Turner Valley three years ago, one of the non-negotiable items on our wish list was that our new town must have a library. Having said that, we get it that a library is not everyone’s priority. Similarly, my husband and I (childless) have no need for a playground, yet we cheerfully give thanks every time we see kids on the swings. We aren’t big joiners, but we nod with approval when we drive …
