Foothills film club showcases local project

A group that has been showing independent films each month finally has the opportunity to show a project by local filmmakers.
The Dogtooth Mountain Film Group are screening Zoe Slusar and Bailey Kerluke’s first feature-length movie on Monday at The Stop in Black Diamond.
Slusar and Kerluke, who are both Oilfields High School graduates, wrote, starred, filmed and produced “Summer School” in 2009, completing the project earlier this winter. Gallery activities provide window to Japanese culture

The Okotoks Art Gallery at The Station is presenting several opportunities for children, adults, families and seniors to learn about aspects of Japanese culture inspired by the “From Geisha to Diva” exhibit.
For adults, two Art After Dark @ OAG events feature an evening of sipping wine while learning about Japanese culture. On Jan. 14 curator Barry Till will discuss the role geishas played in Japanese society over the past two centuries. Gallery exhibit showcases famous geisha’s kimonos

For most North Americans, geisha symbolized Japanese beauty, but they were more talented – and more respected – than the beauty pageant winners we have on this continent.
A traveling exhibition at the Okotoks Art Gallery at The Station (OAG) for the next two months will offer a window into the traditional geisha culture through the intricate beauty of one woman’s kimonos.

A country music star will be among the locals helping the foothills area celebrate the Olympic torch making a stop in High River.
George Canyon, a Juno and Canadian Country Music Association award winner, will headline the celebration on the outdoor stage at the Olympic Winter Games event on Jan. 18. Canyon will be joined by Okotoks singer and radio personality Melanie Laine.

Library develops kit to give local book clubs kickstart

The Okotoks Public Library has a great new resource for local book clubs.
The Book Club-in-a-Box kits contain six copies of a title and a reading group discussion guide. Plus, the kits have an extended loan period of six weeks to ensure book club members have enough time to get the required reading completed.
“We’re really excited to offer our new Book-Club-in-a-Box kits. There are quite a few ongoing book clubs in our community and we wanted to help them by putting together these kits,” said assistant librarian Caleigh Haworth.

Cowboy poet and songwriter team up for unique show

Two western performers are having the time of their lives touring and telling stories about the ranching way of life.
In January cowboy poet Doris Daley and singer-songwriter Eli Barsi and will get comfortable at The Stop in Black Diamond for an evening of good times and good music.
Barsi, who grew up in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, performs a combination of traditional and original Western-roots, gospel and folk songs on mandolin and guitar.

Comic to warm up frosty curling event

A comedian who has an arm’s length fondness for the sport of curling will be helping the Oilfields Curling Club warm up its 50th anniversary.
On Jan. 2, Calgary comedian Jebb Fink will perform as the culmination of the three-day Frosty Rocks Outdoor Bonspiel — adding in his own odd observation of the beloved Canadian sport.

Turner Valley skates into the New Year

The Town of Turner Valley is inviting foothills residents to bundle up the children, grab the skates and head to the Flare ‘n’ Derrick for New Year’s Eve.

Children’s party will  ring in Okotoks’ New Year

Plenty of fun and games will ensure local youth are tuckered out by the time the fireworks close Okotoks’ annual New Year’s Eve party, leaving the young ones ready for bed and the adults ready for their own brand of fun.

Valley Neighbours’ News

I have a huge flock of redpolls at my feeder.  Perhaps this will be the winter that they are plentiful.  Some winters we see very few.
Something is certainly taking advantage of the suet feeder, but I have a feeling it is the magpies. I have a black squirrel, there are lots of deer tracks and my neighbour saw two moose earlier this week, so the wild things are getting through the winter.
