There are only a few days left to visit an award-winning fish and chips restaurant in Okotoks.

The British Chippy, which opened on Elizabeth Street nearly 10 years ago, is closing its doors later this week.

The last day the restaurant will be open is Saturday, April 27, said Simone Hodgkinson, who owns the business with her husband Gary.

The couple operate another British Chippy restaurant in southwest Calgary that will remain open.

“We just got to the point where we need a better work-life balance, so we had to make the tough decision to let one of them go,” Simone told the Western Wheel.

She said the decision to close was extremely hard but will give the family more time to be together.

“Fish and chips fits that little ambient house and that warm coziness,” she said. “It will be really hard on Saturday when we close up for the last time.”

Although there are personal reasons for closing, Simone said there’s been a noticeable change in the restaurant business since food trucks have been able to regularly operate in the area.

“Okotoks has definitely seen a change in trade, with the amount of regular food trucks that we can have,” she said.

The British Chippy has been a regular winner of the Western Wheel Readers' Choice Awards for Best Fish and Chips.
