Fatal shooting a shock

Not very often we have a situation like the shooting in Okotoks on the weekend.
I am sure most of us were stunned/shocked when the news began to filter through the normally quiet town on Sunday morning.
It is so sad that family violence has become such a common occurrence in this era we live in. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lewis family at this time as they try to cope with the reality of what has happened. It will never be the same again.
We also express our concern …

Proud to be Canadian on Canada Day

Hope everyone had a great Canada Day. There was a lot happening here in the foothills.
From Blackie to Millarville and of course right here in Okotoks there were pancakes flipping, kids bouncing and everything ended with a  blast. In Okotoks and the High Country the day ended with brilliant fireworks displays.
Following is a list of reasons we have to be proud to be Canadian.
Canadians have alot to be proud of including our 143 Birthday
1. Smarties (not in the USA )
2. Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp (not in the USA )
3. The …

What a day for a parade

Congratulations to all the volunteers who helped to make this year’s Okotoks parade such a great event. There was a little bit of everything and I heard nothing but great comments on the quality of the event.
I thought the security in Okotoks on Parade Day was a little over the top. At exactly 9:30 a.m. barricades came out of the woodwork from all directions to seal the downtown. Too bad they didn’t have a plan to help our guests find parking rather than send them away.
All in all, a fabulous …

As you may be aware The Foothills Highland Games are moving to Okotoks this year and will take place at the Foothills Composite High School on Saturday, Aug. 28. Dawgs’ season underway

The Okotoks Dawgs played their season home opener on Tuesday against the Lethbridge Bulls. Going into that game they were 2-2 on the season with two wins in Moose Jaw and two loses in Weyburn.
It is quite a different team this year with only a few returning players. They have a three game homestand this Friday through Sunday against the Edmonton Prospects. Make sure you get down to Seaman Stadium and cheer the boys on. Their season is fast as they will play 48 games in 55 days. The Dawgs …

A wild weekend awaits

This weekend is the annual Discovery Days and Diamond Valley parade in Turner Valley and Black Diamond. There is a ton of activities planned including the parade and merchant’s fair in Black Diamond as well as a magic show, petting zoo, an outdoor concert and the annual Rhubarb Festival and Quilt Show in Turner Valley.
Of course, what I am really interested in seeing is the pizza eating contest in Black Diamond where someone can win free pizza for a year. Bon appetite.

Restrictions on campers

It has been announced that alcohol will not be allowed in federal parks this camping season. Provincial campgrounds are also under restrictions. Come on, having a beer and sitting by the fire is like apple pie and ice cream. If there are problem campers deal with it, but don’t make all campers pay the price. Have you noticed our rights just keep getting removed one at a time? Now you can’t smoke in your car in some areas including Okotoks as you head to the park and I imagine it …

All the best on Mother’s Day

I remember a time when I thought mothers had it made.
When I was young most mothers stayed home and cooked and cleaned and raised the kids. Piece of cake I thought!
I was fortunate to get through most my child rearing years without changing very many poopie diapers. Today, it is a different ball game and many mothers work outside the home plus do their share of the family chores.
Recently, my son called to tell me when his wife went away for a few days he almost couldn’t keep up with …

Community supports Foothills arena

Judging from the response to the Dunbow Recreation Association’s NHL alumni hockey game and banquet on the weekend it is apparent this group is well on its way to getting a multi-use facility built in the MD of Foothills.
It is always fun to see the crowd participate in a live and silent auction. This one again proved the folks in this area are tremendous supporters of recreation and our quality of life. They came to the table in a very charitable mood and the bidding was strong.
A friend of mine …
