Wheel Cares total impressive

It seems weird for me to be writing this column but believe it or not a handful of people in the area have suggested from time to time that I should keep in touch.

It seems weird for me to be writing this column but believe it or not a handful of people in the area have suggested from time to time that I should keep in touch. OK, I admit it is a pretty small handful, but a reason for me to check in after six months of retirement.

What really prompted me to sit down and write this came after I looked at last week’s issue of the Wheel online. Wow, over $42,000 collected this past Christmas in the Western Wheel Cares Charity fund. The people in our Foothills area never cease to amaze me. Over the 25-plus years that I was at the helm of the Wheel I saw a lot of heartbreak as well as tons of wonderful, positive things. I must say the way this Foothills community steps up to help others is beyond belief. And, to think we only see a portion of the goodwill that is spread throughout. So much more goes on within the shadows of our everyday life.

Anyway, I wanted to congratulate the Wheel readers for their ongoing support of the program and just to let you know how proud I feel for being a small part of it. I must echo Matt’s thanks to Gayle Wolf for the countless hours keeping the program moving forward.

What’s retirement like? I love not having to jump out of bed and head down the hill to work at a ridiculous hour. My favourite part is starting my days slowly and keeping the stress level to a minimum. I must admit I really miss the daily interaction with the community and being on the inside of some of the upcoming events.

I miss lunches and the odd cold beer!

If the dollar doesn’t fall much further I should be around for a few more years so I’II see you around.
