Watch out for icy conditions

The snow has stopped falling and Okotokians are getting a bit of a reprieve from what has become a frigid winter so far. But, don’t put away the snow shovels just yet.

The snow has stopped falling and Okotokians are getting a bit of a reprieve from what has become a frigid winter so far.

But, don’t put away the snow shovels just yet. More importantly, particularly as some of the snow melts this week, keep the ice picks and ice-melt handy.

People in town are great at making sure their sidewalks are shoveled.

This week, ice will be the bigger concern. This is my plea to make sure sidewalks are safe and for people to be careful on walking on icy roads and sidewalks.

I know how important this is first hand right now. My fiancé has a fractured elbow after falling on a patch of ice on a sidewalk on Sunday evening. It was one of those exceptionally slippery sections of water-covered ice that can form after a full day of water dripping from a roof and freezing when night falls.

It was a water puddle earlier in the day and looked that way as we walked by it in the evening.

I slid and caught myself on a bike rack, but she wasn’t so lucky. I turned around to find her on her back, clutching her arm. Thankfully, no surgery or cast is required, but her arm will be in a sling for the next six weeks.

The melt and thaw cycle set to come with this week’s warm weather has the potential to create icy situations.

We are so very fortunate to have a legion of snow angels across the community. Please help by making sure our sidewalks are ice free.
