The Town of Turner Valley needs some helping hands to ring in the new year in three weeks.

Hazel Martin, community events co-ordinator, is looking for 30 volunteers to assist with various tasks during the Family New Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Flare ‘n’ Derrick Community Hall.

“What we’re doing this year is we’re reaching out to our local community group organizations,” said Martin. “We sent a note to our community groups already. Maybe there is a group or two that we’re missing on our list that might be interested in wanting to come and help us.”

Martin said the Town is also encouraging residents to volunteer with tasks including registration, greeting partygoers, serving food and beverages, ensuring the safety of attendees at the wagon-ride loading area and assisting with the face-painting and cookie decorating.

Volunteers are needed to work a two-hour shift either at 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

Martin said the event has grown significantly over the past three years, with 700 attendees counted right before last year’s fireworks. Martin said having 30 volunteers would be ideal to handle similar numbers at this year’s event.

“That would fill in all our positions,” she said. “This event is getting so big that we do need to have that number.”

Hazel said 16 volunteers have registered so far and she’s hoping to see that number double as the deadline approaches. Volunteers are required to register before the end of day on Dec. 16.

“At this time of year people don’t really know what their commitments are going to be so there is always some that come in right at the end,” she said. “It’s a fun night and all of our volunteers are provided with a meal and orientation and we also give a small gift as a token of our appreciation.”

Those interested in helping out can contact Hazel Martin at the Town office at 403-933-4944. More details about the required volunteer positions are available at turnervalley.ca
