Vandals put pet store to sleep

Protesters opposing the sale of puppies at an Okotoks pet store have every right to express their views, but vandalism and harassment crosses the line.

Protesters opposing the sale of puppies at an Okotoks pet store have every right to express their views, but vandalism and harassment crosses the line.

Animal House in Okotoks has been the target of protesters and social media debate over allegations it gets animals from puppy mills and in several cases pets sold at the store became sick soon after they are brought to their new home. The store’s owner Ty Marshall says harassment has escalated in recent weeks as his employees have been threatened and on Jan. 19 someone used red spray paint to write the words “puppy mill” on the front window.

Protesters’ concerns could be legitimate or they could be barking up the wrong tree.

If there is cause for investigation, it should be done by the proper authorities.

The SPCA says it won’t discuss investigations. However, a spokesperson told the Western Wheel neither the Animal House or its owner have been charged with any offences.

Unfortunately, Marshall has been found guilty in the court of public opinion and sentence has also been passed as he’s decided to put an end to the harassment and will be shutting his doors.
