A minivan crashed into the side of the Royal Duke Hotel this afternoon after running a red light and colliding with a truck in the intersection at Elizabeth St. and Centre Ave.

The truck was travelling west just after noon when it was struck by the minivan. Both vehicles spun toward the Duke, and the van slid into the corner of the building.

Nobody was injured in the collision.

“EMS responded and checked everyone out and there were no injuries,” said deputy fire chief Pat MacIsaac. “The van collided with the hotel, so there is minor structural damage to the Duke, but it’s a minor incident in the grand scheme of things.”

Okotoks RCMP Const. Melissa Taylor said driver error and icy roads at the intersection were the likely causes of the accident.

She said the incident is the only vehicle collision reported Jan. 8 despite icy conditions.

“Even yesterday in the snow we mostly just had vehicles go off the road,” said Taylor. “We thought we’d have more accidents, but it was mostly on Highway 2 and 2A people were sliding into the ditch.”

She said people do not tend to slow down in poor weather conditions, so the RCMP was prepared to respond to more calls over the past 48 hours.

“There was only one vehicle collision yesterday and this is it so far today, with no injuries and just property damage,” said Taylor. “It could have been a lot worse this week.”

The cost of damage to the Duke is currently unknown.
