Okotoks RCMP is reminding people to lock their vehicles to prevent thefts after a car and pickup truck were stolen along with numerous reports of suspicious activity on Friday morning.

Okotoks RCMP Cpl. Cory Forsyth said both vehicles were left idling at the time they were stolen on Dec. 2 between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. A silver 2016 Volkswagon Jetta with the Alberta license plate BMG 7813 was stolen in the Cimarron area and a 2016 grey Ford F150 truck with the BC licence plate 6942GF was stolen in the Crystal Green area.

Police have received reports of three suspects who may be involved.

“We think this is all one group of people,” said Forsyth.

He said the reports moved from the south side of town north.

“We got one call in Cimarron area, we got a second call and multiple calls and they just moved to Drake Landing, Crystal Green and Crystal Shores and gone,” he said.

Forsyth said they haven’t received additional calls since 9:30 a.m.

Two suspects were reported in the Cimarron area. The first is described as tall, stocky male wearing a red plaid jacket and the second as a tall, stocky male wearing a dark coloured hoodie. Both were seen together with a small silver car.

A third suspect was seen in the Crystal Shores area. He is described as an African American male wearing a puffy black winter jacket with fur around the hood. He was seen driving a silver Acura with tinted windows.

Forsyth said people should not confront anyone they see in the process of stealing or attempting to steal a vehicle.

“Don’t intervene, just call police and get the best description possible,” he said

Forsyth suggested people look for other vehicles idling nearby in the area.

“There’s always usually two people involved, they have a suspect in a getaway vehicle,” he said. “Keep your eye out for another vehicle, get as best a description as possible and a licence plate is preferable.”

Police remind people to keep their vehicles locked and to remove all valuables.

Forsyth said the vast majority of vehicles thefts are cases where it was left idling or unlocked with the keys accessible in the vehicle.

This was also the case in a Nov. 28 theft of a red Dodge Ram 1500 from the driveway of a home on Cimarron Vista Circle. The vehicle was left running before it was stolen.

Forsyth also reminded people it is illegal under Okotoks municipal bylaws to leave vehicles empty to idle for extended periods.

Under the Town’s idling bylaw vehicles cannot be left to idle more than three minutes when temperatures are above zero and no longer than 10 minutes below zero. There is no limit if there is a passenger or pet in a vehicle.
