Town council needs to show fiscal restraint

Dear Editor, From the Town of Okotoks website: “Town Council has approved the $52.7 million 2016 Operating Budget, the 2016 budget will include a 1.

Dear Editor,

From the Town of Okotoks website:

“Town Council has approved the $52.7 million 2016 Operating Budget, the 2016 budget will include a 1.6 per cent municipal tax increase, meaning the owner of a typical home will pay approximately $35 per year ($2.92 per month) more in municipal taxes in the coming year. ”

Having received my 2016 property tax bill, I am disappointed in the Town spin and concerned about what next year brings. With the Province in need of financial stability I am certain both the Provincial and Federal governments will be checking out our wallets. The Provincial government will also be passing some carbon tax costs to the City.

Here is the reality of my tax bill: Taxes 2015, $2779.54, and requested in 2016, $3009.78. Increase $230.24.

Rounded off that appears to be 8 per cent for Town of Okotoks and 9 per cent for Provincial school levy. The Town of Okotoks increase is $155.18 for a property that does not carry an assessment of $400,000.00.

It is time that the Town started to show some restraint.

Now is the time to tackle the operating budgets and either find some savings or curb your needs.

The Mayor and council will have to show some restraint. I will be taking the next opportunity to cast my ballot for any candidate willing to stop the escalating taxes.
