Top national ranking an honour

I couldn’t be more proud of the Western Wheel team. We received an incredible honour last week from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.

I couldn’t be more proud of the Western Wheel team. We received an incredible honour last week from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.

Every year a panel of judges reviews community newspapers from across Canada and awards are provided to those newspapers that stand out from the crowd. There are different categories based on the number of newspapers printed for each edition. The first category is for newspapers that print up to 1,249 copies of their newspaper. The next category is for newspapers that print between 1,250 to 1,999 copies. The Okotoks Western Wheel newspaper is in the largest category that includes all community newspapers across Canada that print 12,500 to 24,999 copies of each edition.

The Okotoks Western Wheel Newspaper won first place for Best All-Round Newspaper! This is the top honour that you can receive as a community newspaper in Canada. We also won first place for the Best Editorial Page and Western Wheel photo journalist Brent Calver came in second for Best Spot News Photo!

Thank you to everyone who is reading this. We wouldn’t have a reason to report on our local community without readers like you.

Thank you to our advertisers! Newspapers and advertisers have a symbiotic relationship and we wouldn’t be able to keep the lights on without you. It makes us very proud to be the vehicle for you to get your message out to the community.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to every single spoke in the Wheel. All the paper carriers, the newsroom, the advertising consultants, the distribution team, the administrative team, the team at the Great West printing press. We all have an important part to play and these awards are the result of your dedication.
