Okotoks RCMP are investigating after thieves used a garage door opener stolen from a vehicle to enter a Drake Landing area home. Once inside, police say suspects stole keys and drove sway with two vehicles.

Brazen thieves made off with two vehicles after breaking into a home in Drake Landing Green while the residents were sleeping in the early morning hours of Feb. 1.

Residents say sometime after 1:30 a.m., someone was able to lift the garage door high enough to crawl under to get inside and enter the house through an unlocked door.

“They got into the house and they took every single key in sight and the got away with the vehicles,” she said. The Western Wheel has agreed not to identify her over safety concerns.

She and her husband were in their home with their infant child. She said she heard her dog was unsettled and got up to check. Standing at the top of the stairs, she heard a vehicle start and looked through a window where she was her husband’s truck driving away. The suspects drove off with two of the couple’s vehicles, along with a number of keys, she said the thieves also stole wallets, an iPad and a phone.

Her husband then got into a third vehicle at the home and began to follow the suspects into Calgary. The suspects abandoned the vehicles and fled before Calgary Police arrived on scene.

The man said he had no intention to confront them, but he wanted to try to help police and recover his property.

The residents in the home were not harmed in this incident and police have not yet made any arrests in this case.

The couple has changed the locks on their vehicles since the incident and the thieves did not steal any house keys.

She said she normally locks her vehicles every night and the door from the garage into the house, but forgot to do it that night.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa encouraged people to make sure they lock their vehicles.

“People need to ensure that they lock up their doors and take out all their belongings from their vehicles, especially keys and garage openers,” he said.

Randhawa also said people should make sure their garages are locked, as well as the entrance into their homes from an attached garage. He said people don’t often realize that it’s another way for potential thieves to get into their home.

“Members were able to respond fairly quickly and take care of the situation, but yet again the safety of the homeowner can be jeopardized if they leave their doors unlocked in their personal vehicles,” said Randhawa.

Randhawa advised people not to confront or follow anyone caught as in this circumstance.

“It’s not worth putting your life at risk following these bad guys because you never know what you’re going to encounter on the other side,” he said.
