Spend 15 minutes to improve skills

Every January, ABC Life Literacy Canada reminds parents of the importance in engaging in literacy activities as a family to improve a child’s skills and also help adults keep their reading and writing competencies sharp.

Every January, ABC Life Literacy Canada reminds parents of the importance in engaging in literacy activities as a family to improve a child’s skills and also help adults keep their reading and writing competencies sharp. Families are encouraged to take 15 minutes each day to have fun learning something new. Okotoks families are invited to come down to the Okotoks Public Library this Saturday, Jan. 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to participate in our annual Family Literacy Day celebration.

Included in the event will be crafts, games, songs and stories being read aloud in English and in French. This year’s national Family Literacy Day’s Honourary Chair is author and illustrator Barbara Reid whose artwork is created using modelling clay, and so one of the fun activities for participants here at the library to enjoy will be the making plasticine creations that the kids can then take home. There will also be snacks and a used book sale with a bag of books being sold for $4 each. The celebration is free and everyone in the community is invited. As high school students prepare for their upcoming final exams, the library reminds that we have lots of quiet studying space as well as a designated area for groups to sit and softly converse. For those looking for some extra studying assistance, SOLARO is an online tool that provides Alberta curriculum exam preparation for Math, English, Language Arts and Science for grades 3 to 12, and Social Studies for grades 6, 9, and 10 through 12. SOLARO was developed by the creators of THE KEY study guides and is accessible to anyone with a current Okotoks Public Library account. More information is available by clicking on the purple eResources A-Z tab located on the right-hand side of the library’s homepage, www.okotokslibrary.ca or by stopping at the library’s circulation desk. Please watch the newspaper and our website for upcoming information on how local residents can participate in the creation of the library’s 2017 - 2019 Plan of Service that will be developed later this year. The Board of the Okotoks Public Library is looking forward to enthusiastic participation from area citizens as they envision the next three years of library operations.
