Filling the void by filling the net.

Transitioning from transition ace to offensive dynamo Okotoks Marauder Cody Bomersine is making the most of his new found role as the leading goal scorer for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League outfit.

“Last year I really just took it out the d-gate and would get a couple breakaway goals,” said Bomersine. “Our offence relied on our fifth-year veteran guys. This year we needed guys to step up and that was something I was definitely looking to do.”

The opportunity to line up shots from the right side was there for the taking.

Okotoks saw key cogs in last year’s offence move on. Bomersine quickly caught the eye of the coaching staff with his goal-scoring prowess in training situations.

“He started scoring in practice. He was just landing all his shots,” said Marauders head coach Don Haynes. “We knew he was kind of an O-guy last year. Having Cam Chesser going up to A and losing Eric Porter it kind of fell to him to fill the spot.

“It’s a little bit of natural progression and a little bit of him doing all the right things in practice.”

The right things extend beyond the floor.

Bomersine worked on his shot extensively in the off-season,

“I just put the time in, took a lot of shots in the backyard,” Bomersine said. “I’ve got a net in my backyard. I’ve got to use tennis balls because I break the boards, but I go back there and take maybe 100 shots a day, 50 shots a night.”

Through 11 games the Okotokian leads the squad with 17 goals.

He had 11 last season in a transition and defensive role.

“It’s huge to get goals from, I wouldn’t say unexpected because I kind of do expect it from him, but a void happens like that on the right side you see what’s going to happen and he’s definitely stepped up,” the coach added. “He’s a little feisty. He’s toning it down now because he used to take a lot of penalties. He’s pulled it back and is grinding in the right points.”

Bomersine — who would probably win a 100m dash with anyone in 90 per cent of the games he plays — has used his speed, his deceptiveness and his shot to fill the net with regularity.

His teammates on the offensive side of the ball have also played a leading role. Lefty playmaker Taylor McNeill attracts a lot of attention from the opposition while Carter Walker has proved to have the vision to lead the team in assists in his second year on the squad.

“We’ve really had it bumping back and forth with our righties and lefties,” Bomersine said. “A lot of the times I just catch it and shoot over top of a guy and get the outside shot. The swing shot coming from those lefties is huge.

“It feels good to know you’re helping out the team. It’s not just me, we’re getting help from everybody. All the rookies are stepping up, Walker, another righty is stepping up, scoring goals, getting assists.”

The Marauders (7-5-1) take on the Red Deer Rampage at home on June 23 at 8 p.m.

They wrap-up the weekend in a divisional battle with the Calgary Mountaineers, June 25 at 6 p.m. at Stu Peppard Arena.
