Seniors staying active

With fairly regular referrals in newspapers, magazines and T.V. News segments to “Active Seniors,” we feel we should add to that trend and tell you a little about the Okotoks Senior Centre and what it has to offer.

With fairly regular referrals in newspapers, magazines and T.V. News segments to “Active Seniors,” we feel we should add to that trend and tell you a little about the Okotoks Senior Centre and what it has to offer.

Coinciding with residential growth of recent years, membership has certainly kept pace.

However, participation in most activities offered has taken a huge leap: from floor curling to bridge to Wii Bowling (and lots in between) the Centre is buzzing with busy people.

In Okotoks you are welcome as a member at the Centre at 55 years young, and for further program details please contact the Centre at 403-995-4107 or by email: [email protected].

Besides the regular activities, the catered Fall Supper on Sept. 11, will be a special event to start off the Autumn season.

This will be a great opportunity to greet old friends and welcome our newest members.

Tickets will be available to members only until the Centre closes on Sept. 5.

We are looking for some additional activities that you may be interested in, and we would be grateful for your suggestions and assistance in getting them started.

Should you have an interest or hobby that you enjoy and would like to share, that could be the beginning of a new program. Some may tell us that ‘such and such a thing’ has been offered, and tried before, but did not work out.

However, with our newer members, couldn’t we revisit old programs with a new outlook?

We were thinking of, for example, taking in an RPAC performance, visiting the OAG, and if you like a bit of history - the museum is a fine place to start.

Of course, the pathways are close-by and urban walking poles are available at the Library. We may get to the point of walking the Friendship Trail (car-pooling to Black Diamond), and have coffee in Turner Valley before we walk back.

We could stroll along Elma Street, and take in some of the Heritage Homes - a new coffee shop opened there recently. And, of course, we can stay in and enjoy some painting or colouring one afternoon.

Would you be interested in a ‘current affairs’ chat group? Your suggestions will be relayed to us by the Club Facilitator, and we will get back to you.

We are open to any ideas, either indoors or outdoors, that would support new activities and friendships. You may be totally content with what you already do through the Centre but then: You never know what you missed if you don’t try something new, once in a while!
