Re: Cyclists, drivers urged to share road
Tom Maier of the Highwood cycling club doesn’t appear to want to share the road, he wants cyclist to own it! Riding two abreast on the road is totally unsafe and many of the roads in the foothills have hills and steep inclines that prevent good lines of sight to permit safe passing bikes in tandem.
Wide vehicle such as semis and private wider vehicles or trailers won’t have enough reaction time to prevent an injury or to pass. Sharing the road is sharing the road.
Get over as far over to the edge of the road as possible whether or not you have to ride on some of the loose gravel or get a road or mountain bike.
Club rides should only be permitted on primary and secondary highways and the cycle club should be responsible for enforcing safety and security of their members.
I would suggest to Mr. Maier, if your club wants a road to yourselves, start crowdfunding for cycle paths and see how much support you can get for your cause.
Cyclists are as bad as many drivers with getting provocatively aggressive by weaving in front of cars, yelling obscenities and objectionable gesturing.
Roads were invented for cars and drivers pay licence fees and fuel taxes to support roads. What do cyclists pay? Nothing! Zip!
