Random acts of kindness

Dear Editor,

I have been a resident of Okotoks for the past few years and as a senior, with a walker, my mode of transportation has been the town taxi. The town very kindly provides seniors with a taxi card so seniors can travel anywhere in town for a reduced fee.

My first taxi trip was to a doctor and when I exited the taxi, there was a very nice lady standing there waiting for me. I did not know her and she asked me if I needed any help. I said no but we chatted a bit and she walked to the clinic door and opened the door for me.

People have done this numerous times including a seven-year-old boy, who was happy to show dad, “See dad, I can do it too.”

Another time at the clinic, I had to go in this ‘wonky’ elevator to reach the second level, however, the difficulty with turning around in this little elevator took longer than usual and I was caught in between the doors. Right at that minute, a young man appeared and held the door open for me. While talking with the staff, we were laughing about the door and the elevator and the assistant said “I will take you down the elevator and take you home” and she did. She then picked me up for my next appointment.

I was at another clinic and had a very painful injection in my back. A gentleman waiting for his appointment stood up and walked me to the taxi. My thoughts were, “are these people for real?”

Later on, I was with my daughter shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart. All the handicapped parking was occupied, making it difficult to get in between the parking stalls with my walker. When we were ready to leave, I walked around to an open area where my daughter could get me in. It was winter and quite icy and a man in a short sleeved garment, came out of the building and asked if I needed help. He stood there waiting with me until he could see me safely in the car.

I was out with two of my daughters at a very homey restaurant, where it seemed like everyone knew everyone. When we got up to leave, I was closest to the door. One lady jumped up from her table and opened the door. Another lady, having her lunch, said to the lady holding the door, “I was going to do that” and the door lady said “You snooze, you lose!” Great laughter came from the restaurant as same for ourselves. I thought to myself, “Okotoks… a town where kindness lives”.

Thank you all.

A grateful resident of Okotoks,

Mary Lowis
