The Southern Alberta Provincials brought national acclaim to a Foothills Stingray.

Summer Fedor swam to a Top 10 Youth Recognition Award status, a national ranking for her age group at the Southern Alberta Provincials last week in Lethbridge.

“It’s really exciting. Very special to me,” Fedor said.

The youth recognition times are based on the 10-year average of the rank for the award, rounded to the nearest 10th.

Fedor, who earlier in the season became the first female member of the club to achieve a provincial record, earned the acclaim by touching the wall in 30.5 seconds in the 50m freestyle.

The 11-year-old left the meet with five medals – two gold in 100m butterfly and 50m butterfly, silver in 50m backstroke and two bronze 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Her gold in the 50m butterfly came in a Stingrays age group record time of 32.23 seconds.

“I didn’t really have a goal,” Fedor said. “My goal was just to swim my heart out and swim my best.”

She had some company on the podium.

Stingray Montana Dobry also notched a five-medal performance en route to capturing the 4x200m aggregate title for her age group.

“You swim all the 200s and if you win enough races you get the aggregate award,” she said. “I didn’t swim the 200 free or the 200 back, but I did the 200 IM, 200 fly and 200 breast.”

Dobry’s gold in the 200m butterfly and breaststroke was enough to take home the aggregate. She also added silver in 400m IM, 100m butterfly and bronze in 100m breaststroke.

The middle distances have proven to be the right fit for the 11-year-old.

“It’s a good distance for me (200),” she said. “My parents say I have stamina so I do all the longer ones instead of the 50s. I’m not really a sprinter.”

Elsewhere, Roan Clifford earned a pair of bronze meals in the 200m butterfly and 400m IM and was extremely close to earning his qualifying time to the upcoming Summer Championships.

Tess Barber raced to a pair of top-eight finishes in the 50 and 200m breaststroke, Domenic Griesser added four top eight performances, Keton Murphy was sixth and eighth in a pair of races and Abby Thiele finished with two sixth-place showings in the freestyle.

Fedor, Griesser, Thiele and Sara McFadyen added more provincial time standards to their collection.

Next up for Foothills is the Summer Championships in Edmonton from July 6-9.
