Politics and Canada Post

It looks like Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jason Kenney wants to be the leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party. I hear that he will be announcing his run for the Alberta PC leadership on Wednesday, July 6 in Calgary.

It looks like Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jason Kenney wants to be the leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party. I hear that he will be announcing his run for the Alberta PC leadership on Wednesday, July 6 in Calgary.

Of course, priority number one for Mr. Kenney will be uniting conservative-minded Albertans into one party to defeat the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) in the next provincial election. I expect that his campaign will focus on this topic.

My simple understanding of the core Alberta Progressive Conservative ideology is that it’s a political party that is progressive regarding social topics and fiscally conservative. While serving as a MP, Jason Kenney has developed a reputation as a staunch social conservative. While he might not be a perfect fit as the leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party, he might be the best person to bring Wildrose supporters back to the Progressive Conservative Party.

I don’t think that Wildrose supporters could reasonably argue that Jason Kenney isn’t conservative enough. On the other side of the coin, is he progressive enough to gain support from all those Albertans in the centre?

The Okotoks Western Wheel does a lot of business with Canada Post so I have followed the negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers closely. After months of negotiations and no agreement, Canada Post has issued a lockout notice with work disruption starting Friday if an agreement isn’t reached before then.

In recent years Canada Post has been marketing itself as the parcel delivery service for online shopping. Online retailers won’t put their deliveries on hold while Canada Post and the union sort out their differences.

Of course the deliveries from online shopping will be made by other parcel delivery companies and once that switch has been made it will be very difficult to get that parcel delivery business back. I truly hope that an agreement can be reached because a work and service disruption at Canada Post will significantly decrease its market share of parcel delivery that will have long lasting negative impacts to Canada Post as a whole.
