My oldest daughter Ava had a gymnastics competition in Vancouver last weekend and our little family of five took three different modes of transportation to travel there and back. My wife and our two younger children drove out on Wednesday.

Ava rode the bus with her teammates and coaches on Thursday. I flew out on Friday after work. The trip out was quite smooth for everyone.

The trip back was a different story. The road trip got delayed when my wife hit a garden rake that was lying on the highway. This happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and the tire shops in nearby Salmon Arm were closed for the day.

They spent the night in Salmon Arm and got the tire fixed the next morning.

The bus with all of the gymnasts broke down on Rogers Pass in the middle of the night on Sunday night/Monday morning.

After a cold night in the broken down bus a mechanic came out from Calgary to get them back on the road. When all was said and done the bus trip took over 21 hours.

Since the bus couldn’t leave Vancouver until Sunday afternoon and my wife wanted to drive during the daytime rather than in the dark, I stayed back to get Ava onto the bus and then flew back.

With a slight wind from the west the flight was only one hour and one minute.

Yesterday a mother who had heard about my wife Cory’s awful trip home actually slapped me across the face for not giving my wife the plane ticket home on Mothers Day.

In my defense, Cory hates flying.

My heart goes out to everyone who has been evacuated from Fort McMurray. The devastation is unbelievable and I really can’t imagine how awful this is for everyone up there. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Emily Ryan, 15, and Aaron Hodgson, 19, who died in a car accident while fleeing from the fire.
