Foothills SNAPS is working to shine a light on inclusive hiring in the region. The organization deserves praise for taking the lead on the issue with its recent survey of hiring practices in local businesses and organizations.

Business owners should be open minded about creating diverse, inclusive workplaces, particularly when it comes to hiring special needs individuals. Some people will have limitations in certain areas. However, there is plenty to gain from including them in the workforce.

As said by Orvella Small, Foothills SNAPS executive director, people who have hit barriers in their lives are often harder workers because they appreciate the opportunities that open for them. For the individuals themselves, a meaningful job can bring greater independence, more social integration, less reliance on government support and the financial freedom that comes from bringing home a pay cheque.

Many in Foothills communities know people with special needs who are thriving, contributing to their community and standing out for their work.

When someone is given the opportunity, there’s no telling how far they can go.
