Okotokians die in motorcycle accident

Two Okotoks motorcyclists were killed after colliding with a truck and trailer on Tongue Creek Road (Highway 543) southeast of Black Diamond at dusk last night.

Two Okotoks motorcyclists were killed after colliding with a truck and trailer on Tongue Creek Road (Highway 543) southeast of Black Diamond at dusk last night.

RCMP believe the 57-year-old man and 48-year-old woman were eastbound attempting to pass the truck and trailer on the highway east of 128 Street just after 9 p.m. when the collision occurred.

“The truck was making a left hand turn,” said Turner Valley RCMP Staff Sgt. Dwayne Helgeson. “This is totally preventable, this collision.”

Although STARS Air Ambulance was called, the motorcyclists succumbed to their injuries at the scene, he said.

Helgeson said the driver of the truck is not believed to be at fault.

An RCMP collision analyst attended to conduct an investigation, which is ongoing, Helgeson said.

“Part of the investigation is looking at the action of the motorcyclists and looking at what they did and why,” he said. “Skid marks and damage will tell us what happened and we have an independent witness as well.”

Helgeson said the highway is heavily used, but that it’s well maintained and in good condition.

He reminds motorists to obey all traffic laws to help prevent collisions.
