An Okotoks woman was flown by STARS Air Ambulance to Calgary with serious head injuries following a vehicle collision on Highway 7 west of Okotoks early this morning.

Just before 7:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a collision involving a car and pick-up truck at the intersection of Highway 7 and 16th Street W, also known as Big Rock Trail.

The single occupant in the car, a woman in her 50s, had to be removed from the vehicle using the jaws of life and was flown to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital in serious condition.

The two occupants in the truck, a woman in her 40s and a teenage girl, both from Turner Valley, were assessed by paramedics, but did not require transport to hospital, according to a statement by Alberta Health Services.

Okotoks RCMP Cst. Susan Ratchford said road conditions were not a factor and there are no suspicions that drugs or alcohol were involved. The police suspect the accident was caused due to driver error, she said.

The RCMP had the area closed off for at least two hours, with traffic redirected in the meantime.

“We had to shut it down in all directions for STARS,” she said.

Ratchford said dawn and dusk are often the most dangerous and common times that collisions occur and that the intersection is a dangerous one to cross.

“Typically it’s commuters that often get complacent because they do the drive so often,” she said, adding she’s unsure if those involved in the accident are commuters. “You can’t be too cautious.”

The RCMP are investigating the factors leading to this collision.
