New prime minister must listen

When Albertans woke up on Tuesday the sun still shone, people still went to work and the first few hours of Trudeaumania had begun.

When Albertans woke up on Tuesday the sun still shone, people still went to work and the first few hours of Trudeaumania had begun.

Despite the Justin Trudeau-led Liberals taking power for the first time since Paul Martin in 2004 — and its first majority since 2000 — now is not the time for Albertans to cry ‘The Sky is Falling.’

Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau stated the Conservatives are neighbours, not enemies in his victory speech Monday night.

Hopefully, that’s true.

He has shown he is somewhat pro oil-and-gas with a commitment to building a tidewater pipeline somewhere in Canada.

And, any comparison to his father’s infamous National Energy Program is unfair. That program was 35 years ago. Canada has changed and the oil industry has changed.

Canadians went to the polls on Oct. 19 and they voted for a change. There’s no doubt former prime minister Stephen Harper made some mistakes in his near decade at the helm, but his economic record was strong, especially through the financial slump of the late 2000s.

It will be the Conservatives who make sure Trudeau’s commitment of deficits is kept in check.

Newly-elected Foothills MP John Barlow has proven to be a hard-worker in his 15-months as MP for the defunct Macleod riding. He and the other 98 Conservatives’ voices have to be heard.

Mr. Trudeau must listen.

That’s what good neighbours do.
