NHL playoffs shaping up

I finally won!

I should say, the Edmonton Oilers have won the season series against the Calgary Flames.

I have cause to celebrate their victory this year.

After three years, I won my running bet with Okotoks mayor - and Calgary Flames superfan - Bill Robertson.

The bet is simple. I am an Edmonton Oilers fan, the mayor is a Flames fan. If the Oilers win the season series against the Flames, the mayor would have to spend an hour leading a town council meeting wearing my Oilers Jersey. If the Flames win, I would end up wearing the flaming C and write a cheer for the Flames in my column.

For two years running, I’ve lost this bet. Not this time. This time, it was the mayor who was wearing Oiler blue for an hour during Monday’s council meeting.

He even put a picture of it on his Facebook page. That wasn’t part of the bet. Very gracious Mr. mayor.

It’s a good way to go into the playoffs.

As of publication of this issue, it’s looking like five Canadian teams will be in the post-season, so it’s shaping up to be a good spring for hockey fans.

Whether or not it includes a Battle of Alberta, is not yet certain.

I was in elementary school during the glory days of the 1980s when some of the best hockey in the world was being played in our province. It would be incredible to see once again. If it happens, hopefully the Oilers will be able to continue their 4-0 record against the Flames in the regular season.

Here’s hoping the Stanley Cup ends up back in Alberta, preferably in Edmonton.

Go Oilers Go!
