A 24-year-old man and a 16-year-old youth charged in a stolen vehicle pursuit in Okotoks that ended with a collision between an RCMP SUV and Volker Stevin pick-up truck were in court last week.

Anthony Chartrand, 24 of no fixed address, appeared by closed circuit television in Okotoks Provincial Court Friday.

Chartrand is charged with three counts of flight from police, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, three counts of motor vehicle theft, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of fraud, identity fraud, two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, four counts of assaulting a police officer and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Chartrand told the court that his lawyer Andrea Urquhart asked him to put the case over to Aug. 5 for a bail hearing. Crown prosecutor Vincenzo Pingitore said the crown will oppose bail for Chartrand.

A youth is also facing charges and will appear in Calgary youth court Wednesday. He also remains in custody.

The charges stem from a confrontation with Okotoks RCMP and two men suspected to have a stolen truck in the Walmart parking lot the morning of July 14. Police received a complaint about three vehicles stolen from a residence and identified one in the lot.

Two officers tried to stop the vehicle and the driver attempted to run them over and struck several cars.

Police pursued the vehicle northbound on Northridge Drive. At one point the suspect vehicle drove head-on into southbound traffic.

An RCMP press release said they called off the pursuit, but at the intersection of Northridge Drive and Elizabeth Street a police SUV struck a Volker Stevin Truck. Both drivers were taken to hospital with minor, non-life threatening injuries. The RCMP officer suffered a broken arm.

The suspect vehicle continued north and was later located by High River and Okotoks RCMP.
