Tough as it may be for some to swallow, MD of Foothills councillors made the right choice in approving a small tax increase for 2018.

Council had the option to not raise the MD’s tax mill rate, but it ended up unanimously supporting a 0.5 per cent rise last week. The increase amounts to about $23 for the average household.

The increase will go towards increasing policing resources, spending that had not been previously considered, to combat rising rural crime rates.

Zero is usually the preferred tax increase, and under ideal circumstances it should be the goal. If taxes are to go up, it should be for a good reason.

The MD has seen property crime rates climb in recent years and MD council made the right move approving a small tax increase to bring more police resources to bear. With new, higher density developments proposed in the Foothills, the MD will need to boost emergency services to ensure these communities, and existing residents have the protection they need and deserve.

This year’s increase is a worthwhile investment and provides a base that council can build on in years to come.
