Looking ahead for 2017

2016 is over and many would just as soon forget it ever happened.

2016 is over and many would just as soon forget it ever happened.

For many, it was a difficult year as Alberta’s economy continued to struggle with a low price of oil, more than 100,000 layoffs in the oil patch, and lingering recession that impacted families, businesses and communities across the province.

Many rang in the New Year with fingers crossed for a better 2017.

This week the price of oil reached an 18-month high on the heels of an OPEC deal to cut production, bringing with it hopes of improved fortunes in Alberta. Much-needed pipeline capacity given federal approval will help put the energy industry on a more stable footing as it recovers. There are also signs Alberta’s economy will rebound. The Conference Board of Canada predicts Alberta will emerge from recession this year, while the provincial government expects Alberta’s GDP to grow by 2.3 per cent.

In Okotoks, hopes are high for provincial sign-off on the Town’s annexation plans and funding for a water pipeline.

There is reason for optimism, even if it comes with some trepidation as the provincial carbon tax takes effect and the effects of the recession linger.

It’s time now to look ahead and move forward.
