Logging plans disturbing

Dear Editor,

It has been brought to my attention that there are plans to log in an area of the Eastern Slopes by the Highwood Junction west of Longview. The Fitzsimmons, Baril and Etherington Creek are all special areas where many enjoy hiking in the summer and ski touring in the winter, fishing and camping. Moose, bear, wolves, elk, deer, cougar as well as small mammals and birds all seek haven in the mixed forest and wetland area adjacent to these creeks and rivers. Delicate and diverse flora and fauna offer slope stability, vegetation for wildlife and of course immeasurable beauty. The Great Divide Trail also is in close proximity.

It is significant to note the importance of a healthy watershed anywhere near the Highwood River. The flood in 2013 was so devastating to the Town of High River in no small part due to logging in the Eastern Slopes.

Not only that, this area is visible from the southern gateway to the majestic Highway 40 route. Tourists venture to this area for its beauty and tranquility. This is a special and treasured landscape.

I am not aware of plans for meaningful and accessible public consultations. I hope that citizens have a chance to have their say prior to the planned logging activity.
